Caique Parrots

Caiques have lots of personality. They live around the amazon basin. These birds are fearless enough that they sometimes strike back at a macaw, if given the opportunity, they will also take advantage of other pets, even dogs and cats. Because they are so active and need more toys than most parrots, the minimum cage size is 30x30x30. The bar spacing is around 1/2-1 inch. They can live to about an average of 30 years and a maximum life span of 50 years.

There are only two caiques. The Black headed and the White Bellied.

Black headed Caiques

This is the bird that I have. They are 9 inches long (6 inches in body height). They have a black head that ends at the end of the beak, the rest of the head is yellow, a white chest and a white belly, with green wings and back, orange legs, gray feet and black nails. These birds have a low-moderate voice level and are small so they are fine to keep in a apartement. They love to hop, unfold laundry, rip newspaper, and eat food. They are very curious. They also love to play with toys (like any parrot!)Because they are so active and need more toys than most parrots. the minimum cage size is 36x36x36. The bar spacing is around 1/2-3/4 inch. They can live to about an average of 30 years and a maximum life span of 50 years.

White Bellied Caiques

They have the same personality but are harder to find. Unlike the black headed caique, they don't have a black head.

Facts

*Most people have a hard time pronouncing caique for the first time. It is pronouced "ky-eek".

*My caique only comes to me and everyone else except one of my family memebers. She tries to handle him, he refuses. This happened just because we took him to a new place for the vet and started to panic. So be aware what might happen if you give a new change to your bird!
